The European Union condemned the recent attack that targeted the outskirts of the city of Smara.
The Union considered that this is not a time for escalation, but a time for negotiation according to Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), based on the Moroccan autonomy plan, in order to reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution that is in accordance with the United Nations Charter. The United Nations had, in turn, condemned the recent attack on the city of Smara. The United Nations spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, called for avoiding any steps that would threaten the ongoing political process, noting that the "MINURSO" mission expressed its deep concern following the shootings that targeted civilian areas near Smara on May 5th.
