US President Donald Trump announced an agreement between Ukraine and Russia for a temporary three-day truce, starting Saturday, along with the exchange of a thousand prisoners from each side.
Trump explained, via a post on social media, that the expected ceasefire includes Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, expressing hope that this development would mark the beginning of the end of a war he described as long, bloody, and intense. In contrast, Russia had previously announced a unilateral ceasefire for two days, coinciding with the commemoration of Victory Day in World War II on May 9th, while Ukraine confirmed that it had, in turn, proposed a truce, but Moscow did not respond to the proposal. This development comes within the context of repeated diplomatic attempts to de-escalate the ongoing conflict between the two parties for years.
