HIBAPRESS
The Moroccan Organization for Human Rights positively noted the announcement by the Public Prosecutor in the city of Fes to open a judicial investigation into the circumstances and details of the collapse of a residential building, calling for the investigation to be completed within a reasonable timeframe, with the determination of responsibilities and the arrangement of legal effects in accordance with the constitutional principle of linking responsibility to accountability.
The organization said, in a statement issued by its executive office, that it received with great sadness and sorrow the incident of the collapse of the residential building that occurred on the morning of Thursday, May 21, 2026, which resulted in a number of deaths and injuries, extending its sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. The human rights body considered that the repetition of incidents of the collapse of residential buildings in the city of Fes and other cities cannot be treated as an isolated incident, but rather reflects the existence of serious imbalances related to the file of construction and buildings that are at risk of collapse, and raises questions about the extent of respect for legal and technical controls during the building permit, or ignoring buildings that do not meet safety and protection conditions, which constitutes a direct infringement on the right to life and physical safety. The organization also called on the authorities and officials in the city of Fes to adopt a proactive, comprehensive, and urgent approach to dealing with the conditions of neighborhoods threatened by the collapse of buildings, including the Al-Hassani neighborhood, Al-Jannat, Ain Al-Naqbi, Al-Bourniyat, and the 45 area and other fragile areas. The organization demanded urgent intervention to rehabilitate buildings at risk of collapse, and to take measures to ensure the safety of residents, while providing housing solutions that preserve the dignity of citizens and protect them from the dangers of potential disasters, in addition to guaranteeing decent housing for families affected by the collapse of their homes in a manner that ensures their right to shelter and social protection in accordance with the principles of human dignity.
