The evidence that climate change has caused mass deaths is already shocking.
In the early 2000s, Australian epidemiologist Anthony McMichael developed a method to estimate mortality based on certain climatic risk factors.
These factors include flooding, malnutrition, diarrhea, malaria and cardiovascular disease, and the total number of deaths attributable to climate change has risen to 166,000 per year.
If we take this estimate, Colin Carlson assures that the climate crisis kills almost as many people each year as expected.
The estimate of 4 million deaths by 2024 is very conservative, because the McMichael method does not take into account a number of other climate-related threats that experts have better understood in recent years.
Global warming has also led to excess mortality from famine, conflict, suicide, wildfires and dozens of chronic and infectious diseases such as dengue fever.
