Room 05 at the Court of Appeal in Fez witnessed a new session this Monday morning in the case of the murder of the leftist student Mohamed Ben Aissa Aït El Jid, a case whose details date back to the student violence that occurred at the University of Fez in 1993, and in which the leader of the Justice and Development Party, Abdelaali Hami Eddine, is being pursued.
The Criminal Chamber of Appeal decided to postpone the consideration of the case until October 15th, following a request submitted by Hami Eddine's defense team, which requested an additional deadline to prepare the defense, in addition to the absence of the lawyer Mohamed Chehbi from yesterday's session due to his suffering from a health problem. This postponement comes in the context of one of the most controversial judicial cases in Morocco, given its long duration and the complexity of its political and human rights backgrounds, as the case of the murder of the base student Mohamed Ben Aissa Aït El Jid has remained present in the public debate for more than three decades. The Criminal Court of First Instance at the Court of Appeal in Fez had sentenced Abdelaali Hami Eddine to three years in prison, after reclassifying the charge against him from "contributing to premeditated murder" to "participating in the beating and wounding that led to death without the intention of causing it". This case continues to attract the attention of political and human rights circles, given the symbolism of the victim and the nature of the accusations related to the university violence that occurred during the nineties, pending what the upcoming appeal sessions will reveal of new developments in this thorny case.
