HIBAPRESS-RABAT
There is no smoke without fire and if there is a spark, it is because there is something fishy going on and it is in this perspective that the continental body of African football CAF, is once again making headlines. This time, it is Veron Mosengo-Omba its secretary general who is pinned by a so-called report written by the Chadian Atcha Mahamat Saleh Director of Legal Affairs, in charge of Compliance.
The report allegedly accuses him of “a stressful, unethical and unprofessional environment within the CAF administration and repeated instances of inappropriate language in communications between departments of the organisation”.
A scandal that has shaken CAF, which seemed to have regained a certain stability since the arrival of Doctor Motsepe at its head.
According to some sources, this five-month-old report had been concealed by the SG in question, before President Motsepe also tried to conceal it, thus wanting at all costs to cover his Secretary General, but to what end?
This is because the CAF president has called an emergency meeting this week by videoconference and an independent commission has been appointed to shed light on this matter.
Reacting via his X account, Veron Mosengo-Omba proclaims his innocence and writes: “My efforts to straighten out and regularize this Institution that has been disrespected in the past are the subject of an attempt at sabotage through a report that came out of nowhere containing grievances without documented evidence. The independent investigation will demonstrate its falsity and its origin.”
Arriving in March 2021 at the head of the general secretariat of the body, from FIFA where he held the position of regional head of the FIFA Member Associations division for Africa and the Caribbean, Veron Mosengo-Omba has always been described as ”the shadow of FIFA”, or its main relay.
According to some languages, the CAF SG behaved like the real boss of the Confederation of African Football, thus strengthening FIFA’s hold on CAF.
Less than a year before the end of Motsepe’s term, whose presidency is more contested than ever, this affair discredits this scandal-ridden CAF, some retort.
Pending the conclusions of the independent investigation set up, the Congolese still benefits from the presumption of innocence, until proven guilty.
