HIBAPRESS – Rabat
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez affirmed that his government does not have data proving that Morocco was behind the wave of mass migrant flow towards the occupied city of Ceuta last July.
During a session before the Spanish House of Representatives, Sanchez explained that various entities that could provide information on this matter, whether intelligence agencies, diplomatic channels, or international institutions, including the European Commission, have not provided the Spanish government with any decisive evidence confirming that the Moroccan authorities had previously planned or coordinated that wave of migration.
The Spanish Prime Minister also touched on the security gap that lasted for several hours during the events, pointing to the possibility that it was related to the inability of the Moroccan security services to deal with the large numbers that attempted to reach occupied Ceuta.
Sanchez was keen to emphasize that what happened did not undermine the level of cooperation between Madrid and Rabat, stressing that security coordination between the two countries before and after the incident contributed to thwarting thousands of irregular crossing attempts.
The Spanish official stressed that the assessment of such incidents must be based on confirmed information and data, not on conclusions or assumptions, in a clear message about the need to deal with the migration file and relations with Morocco away from unproven accusations.
