Authorities are moving to put an end to the chaos accompanying the spread of small electric scooters, "trotinettes," in several Moroccan cities by implementing new provisions to regulate the use of these vehicles. A transitional period of six months will be granted to users to adapt their vehicles to the new safety conditions and rules adopted within the traffic system.
The new conditions include a number of safety-related measures, such as setting the maximum speed at 25 kilometers per hour, wearing a protective helmet that meets the required standards, and prohibiting the use of headphones while driving. Vehicles will also be required to have lighting, reflectors, an audible warning device, and other necessary equipment to ensure visibility and the safety of road users.
The new rules also impose controls on where "trotinettes" can be used, especially outside urban areas, where the possibility of riding is linked to the existence of dedicated paths or lanes. This is part of an effort to limit the random use of this modern means of transportation and reduce the risks that could threaten road users.
The six-month grace period serves as a transitional phase for riders to correct their situations and meet the required conditions before moving to a stricter phase in the application of regulatory provisions. This step is expected to contribute to organizing the use of "trotinettes" and integrating them more clearly into the traffic system, thereby enhancing road safety and protecting road users from accidents related to the unorganized use of these vehicles.
