HIBAPRESS – Abdel Latif Barka
Areas within the Taroudant province are on alert, amid warnings of the possibility of flash floods forming due to weather fluctuations that mountainous regions may experience in the coming hours.
These warnings come after an alert bulletin that warned of the possibility of thunderclouds forming at high altitudes, following a strong heatwave exceeding 42 degrees Celsius. These weather conditions could contribute to the appearance of heavy and sudden rainfall in the Atlas and mountainous areas of the province.
This situation is of particular importance given the topographical nature of the Taroudant province, which includes mountainous areas, slopes, valleys, and ravines that could, in a short time, transform into powerful watercourses when heavy rainfall is recorded over a short period.
The danger of flash floods is increasing with climate change and the frequency of extreme weather phenomena, especially after long periods of drought and high temperatures, which make the soil and watercourses more vulnerable to sudden water loads.
In confronting these risks, local services are expected to continue activating vigilance and monitoring mechanisms, especially in mountainous areas and points known for their high susceptibility to floods. This includes mobilizing the necessary logistical means and mechanisms to intervene and open roads in the event of any disruptions.
The importance of citizens exercising extreme caution, especially residents of mountainous areas and users of roads near valleys and ravines, is also highlighted. They should stay away from watercourses and not risk crossing them during thunderstorms.
These warnings bring to the forefront the necessity of strengthening proactive measures and raising the readiness of infrastructure against sudden climate fluctuations, to avoid repeating flood scenarios that have previously caused human and material losses in the province.
