A palliative care doctor was remanded in custody in Berlin on Wednesday on suspicion of murdering four patients and setting fires, German media reported, citing police.
The 39-year-old doctor is suspected of killing his female patients, aged 72 to 94, between June 11 and July 24. The crimes allegedly took place in the victims’ homes, but details of the exact circumstances of the murders remain vague for now. It seems, according to initial information published by the press, that the suspect tried to cover up his actions by setting fire to the apartments.
On July 8, he allegedly killed a 76-year-old woman in Neukölln, but the fire he set to cover up his crime failed. Another 87-year-old victim, killed on June 11, was reportedly temporarily resuscitated by paramedics before dying in hospital. The other two victims also lived in Neukölln and Plänterwald.
The motives for these acts are not yet established. The fires also affected other residents of the buildings, some of whom were injured. The police had already opened an investigation into arson after the first incident.
The tragedy comes shortly after another doctor was convicted in April of killing two patients through drug overdoses.
