HIBAPRESS – Ahmed Al-Masaad
All eyes are turning towards the city of Oujda, the capital of the Eastern Region, which is witnessing intense political activity as the date of the upcoming electoral contest on September 23 approaches. These elections are of great importance given the vast geographical expanse of the region, which includes eight provinces and prefectures: Oujda-Angad, Berkane, Nador, Driouch, Jerada, Figuig, and Guercif.
At the parliamentary representation level in the House of Representatives, political actors are competing for a total of 30 seats representing the region. These are distributed between 23 seats for local constituencies and 7 seats within the regional electoral constituency allocated to the Eastern Region.
The 23 local seats are distributed among eight electoral constituencies as follows: Oujda-Angad Prefecture: 4 seats; Nador Province: 4 seats; Berkane Province: 3 seats; Driouch Province: 3 seats; Figuig Province: 3 seats.
Taourirt Province: 2 seats; Guercif Province: 2 seats; Jerada Province: 2 seats.
These elections come amid aspirations to enhance popular participation. The Eastern Region had recorded an overall participation rate of about 46% in the elections of 2021, while the rate in Oujda-Angad Prefecture reached 24.83%. As the voting date approaches, voters in various constituencies are preparing to head to the ballot boxes to choose their representatives for the coming years.
