The Americans won Olympic gold for the fifth time on Saturday, beating Brazil for the third time in the final (1-0) on Saturday at the Parc des Princes.
With this victory, the Americans now hold the absolute record for Olympic titles with 5 gold medals (1996, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2024), not counting the four World Cups (1991, 1999, 2015, 2019).
Launched by captain Lindsey Horan, Mallory Swanson adjusted with a flat foot the Brazilian goalkeeper Lorena, the bulwark of the Selecao (1-0, 57th), to score her 4th goal of the Games. She is the second best scorer of the tournament behind the French Marie-Antoinette Katoto.
Having been battered until then by the Brazilians’ aggression and counter-attacking, they managed to turn the match around.
In the first half, they struggled to be really dangerous, unlike the Seleçao, who had a goal disallowed for offside by Ludmila (15th).
