Ibrahim Adalghadi, the Deputy Mayor of Tiznit Municipality responsible for Public Works and Green Spaces, clarified that the fire at the communal landfill, which prompted reactions from residents on the eastern bank of the city through calls and complaints about the rising smoke, was caused by an unknown person deliberately setting fire to a load of paper and cardboard late at night, according to a statement he issued.
The municipal official added that upon learning of the incident, officials went to the scene to assess the situation, contacted civil defense services to explore intervention possibilities, and mobilized the municipality's tanker truck. He indicated that these interventions managed to control the flames and extinguish part of the fire. However, due to the nature of the waste, which primarily consists of flammable materials, the embers continue to burn, leaving behind smoke clouds and the possibility of reignition. Adalghadi affirmed that the municipality is monitoring the situation on the ground until the fire is completely extinguished, noting the formation of a special emergency committee to follow developments and work towards a swift solution. He also explained that the issue of fires and smoke at the old landfill has been addressed since 2022, by closing two sections of the landfill and keeping the remaining part open pending the opening of the new landfill.
In the same context, the Deputy Mayor of Tiznit Municipality revealed that the construction work for the new communal landfill has reached 96 percent completion and that the project is in its final stages, with its opening expected soon. He considered that its operationalization would put an end to the problems associated with the current landfill, emphasizing that the municipality is dealing with the incident with a sense of responsibility and in search of solutions, in order to protect the interests of the residents.
