About 15 people have been arrested by Vietnamese police in connection with a baby trafficking ring that saw 16 newborns smuggled through several cities and provinces across the country.

The suspects were taken into custody for selling babies aged between three days and three months, the official police gazette in Ho Chi Minh City (south) announced on Wednesday.

Police said the gang targeted women through private social media groups, exploiting those who struggled to provide for and care for their children.

Traffickers bought each baby for between $400 and $930, then forged adoption papers and resold them for between $1,400 and $3,000, the newspaper said.

Police have investigated 84 suspected cases of baby trafficking that have occurred since the beginning of the year in 32 cities and provinces.
