Farmers reassure Moroccans: “Olive oil will not reach 150 dirhams… and brokers are behind this rumor.”
Heba Press – Rabat
As the olive harvest season approaches in Morocco, several players are spreading rumors of a surge in olive oil prices this year.
Several stakeholders reported that the price of olives had increased this year to 150 dirhams per liter due to successive years of drought and the lack of olive production in most regions.
In this regard, Heba Press contacted a number of farmers, who refuted the circulating rumours, stressing that they were premature.
Farmers in the regions of Kelaa Sraghna, Beni Mellal, Guercif and other regions known for producing this food confirmed that this year’s olive production would be equal to last year’s.
Farmers ruled out raising the price of olive oil to 150 dirhams, stressing that brokers deliberately spread this rumor to sell the oil at a high price to citizens.
It is worth noting that the price of olive oil last year varied between 75 and 90 dirhams per liter, depending on its quality and the region to which it belongs.
