Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the outgoing Algerian president, was re-elected for a second term with 94.65% of the vote. However, the turnout did not exceed 50%, reflecting a certain disaffection among the electorate.
Out of a total of 5.630 million “votes recorded, 5.320 million voted for the independent candidate” Tebboune, “or 94.65% of the votes”, declared Sunday the president of the electoral authority (Anie), Mohamed Charfi.
During this election, the outgoing president faced two competitors: Abdelaali Hassani, leader of the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), who came in second with 3.17%, and Youcef Aouchiche, leader of the Front of Socialist Forces (FFS), who obtained 2.16% of the vote.
In his first election in December 2019, Tebboune won 58% of the vote, with an even lower turnout of just 39.83%, in a context marked by the pro-democracy Hirak movement and calls for a boycott of political parties.
The low turnout in the Algerian presidential elections remains an indicator of the political tensions still present in the country.
