HIBAPRESS-RABAT
South Africa is today facing several social problems that give it an attitude of total insecurity throughout the country and it is not for nothing that we observe cases of behavior, among others, xenophobic, in particular attacks, acts of violence, looting and demonstrations.
Insecurity of services
Nationwide power shortages or blackouts, known as load shedding, continue to occur regularly. They occur multiple times a day and for periods of several hours. They are expected to continue throughout 2024 and into 2025. As such, the associated risks are high, including a loss of electricity across the country for days or weeks.
South Africa has already experienced power outages lasting 12 hours in 24 hours. Increased demand for electricity during the coldest winter months of June and July means the outages could last longer. South Africa is set to face a dark and cold winter.
Power outages could increase the risk of criminal activity in affected areas, which in turn could lead to opportunistic robberies, rapes, banditry…
In any case, power outages can affect the following services and businesses:
Telecommunications and security systems;
Food stores and supplies;
Hotels and other accommodation;
Banks and ATMs;
Gas stations;
Street lighting and traffic lights.
It is not only electricity that is in serious shortage, but also the water supply is sometimes interrupted, and these interruptions can be long in some areas, which causes major inconvenience.
