Morocco’s eastern region experienced record rainfall between August 28 and September 13, reaching a 147% increase compared to the same period last year. These rains helped to strengthen dam reserves and boost the morale of farmers who were hoping for a prosperous agricultural season.
The province of Figuig recorded the highest percentage of rainfall with 108 mm, followed by Jerada with 52 mm, then Oujda-Angad with 45 mm. On the other hand, the provinces of Nador, Berkane and Driouch experienced limited rainfall not exceeding 2 mm.
Mohamed Al-Yaqoubi, Regional Director of Agriculture, explained that the stock of dams in the region amounted to 288 million cubic meters, an increase of 133 million cubic meters, noting that three dams have reached their maximum capacity, namely Oued Zaa, Al-Safis and Al-Rikaa dams. This increase in injections into the dams ensures about 30% of the irrigation needs in the lower basins of the Moulouya.
In addition to the dams, these rains help improve the watercourse and provide fodder for livestock, as well as improve agricultural production of 33 thousand hectares of fruit trees such as olive and almond trees.
