A joint operation by the provincial security services of Safi and the National Brigade of the Judicial Police (BNPJ) enabled the thwarting, on Saturday evening, of an international trafficking operation of 8 tonnes and 112 kg of chira, via the port of Safi.

This operation led to the seizure of this drug shipment packaged in 199 bales intended for international trafficking by sea and loaded on board a goods transport truck registered in Morocco, which was immediately intercepted upon arrival at the port of Safi-Atlantique, a press release from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said on Sunday.

Investigations carried out in this case resulted in the arrest of 21 individuals, aged between 24 and 48, for alleged links with the criminal network involved in this international trafficking, in addition to the seizure of barrels containing 1,160 litres of petrol as well as another van on site, adds the same source.

The investigations related to this case lasted several weeks, based on information indicating that a criminal network was planning an international drug trafficking operation, which required the upstream monitoring and tracing of this shipment before it was seized and the people involved were arrested, the press release continued.

The suspects were subjected to the judicial investigation conducted by the BNPJ under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office, with a view to identifying all the local and international ramifications of this criminal activity and to confound all the individuals involved in this criminal network. This security operation is part of the intensive efforts deployed by the DGSN services to combat international drug trafficking, concludes the same source.
