The southern provinces of the Kingdom have benefited from major renewable energy projects, which are currently in the operational phase and whose total capacity exceeds 1.3 Giga Watt (GW) for an investment of nearly 22 billion dirhams ( MMDH), said Monday to the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali.
In response to an oral question in the House of Representatives on “investment in renewable energies”, the minister indicated that the southern provinces of the Kingdom also benefit from many other projects with a capacity of 1.4 GW with a investment of approximately 21 billion dirhams.
These projects are in line with the high royal guidelines and reflect the interest shown by the ministry in the southern provinces with a view to contributing to local development, economic dynamics and job creation in these regions, a- she noted.
The minister also recalled that in execution of high royal guidelines, Morocco adopted a model aimed essentially at ensuring diversification of renewable energy sources and increasing its share in the electricity mix to 52%. horizon 2030.
Ms. Benali also noted that the installed electrical capacity of renewable energies reached 5.3 GW, or approximately 44.3% of the overall installed capacity, noting that investments in renewable energies have quadrupled, going from approximately 3.5 billion dirhams per year between 2009 and 2022 for an annual investment of 15 billion dirhams between 2023 and 2027.
She, on this occasion, reviewed the strategic measures put in place by the ministry to face the challenges relating to the encouragement of competitiveness in the field of renewable energies, which essentially consist of “improving governance of the energy sector, through the establishment of an institutional framework”, “the acceleration of the pace of investments in renewable energies” and “the development of control and flexibility of the electricity system in order to support the “intense integration of renewable energies”.
These measures also relate to “local industrial integration through the strengthening of research, development and innovation to increase the social and economic impact of the energy transition”, “continuous improvement of the legislative and regulatory framework taking into account the rapid transformations of this sector”, in addition to “the harmonious and transparent mobilization of the land base which plays a major role in the development of energy projects”.
