The British news agency Reuters revealed that the agreement concluded yesterday Monday by the Office Chérifien des Phosphates with the French energy company “Engie” aims to accelerate the energy transition and contribute effectively to the energy transition of the Kingdom of Morocco. It will create investments of up to 17 billion euros ($18 billion) in water desalination, renewable energy and green hydrogen, according to a source familiar with the matter.
This agreement aims to launch a number of ambitious projects in the areas of renewable energy, energy storage, green hydrogen, green ammonia, power infrastructure and sustainable water desalination, in addition to develop a research and innovation agenda in these areas.
The agreement will also help strengthen the local industrial system and create new opportunities for national and international contracts. The agreement, linked to the activities of OCP, includes five projects: “electric transport network”, “green hydrogen”, “green electricity”, “desalination of water for agricultural use” and “research and innovation”.
The source close to the deal noted that the renewable energy projects are expected to start in 2026, while the water desalination and green hydrogen projects are expected to start in 2028 and 2032, respectively.
It should be noted that the agreement was signed in the presence of King Mohammed VI and French President Emmanuel Macron during the latter’s state visit to Morocco. This is the twentieth “joint development” agreement between OCP and Engie as part of a partnership aimed at the energy transition in the Kingdom.
