The General Directorate of Meteorology announced in a press release the formation of the “Dana” depression phenomenon following the descent of a cold air mass which separated from the cold jet stream in the upper layers of the atmosphere .
According to the same press release, this depression led to a state of instability in the atmosphere, causing heavy rains, violent thunderstorms and violent winds which caused serious damage during the night of Tuesday and Wednesday in the southeast of Spain, where a mass of warm, humid air from the Mediterranean Sea met cold air in the upper classes. This difference in temperature and humidity contributed to the formation of updrafts and heavy rain.
According to the same statement, the southeastern region of Spain was strongly affected due to its Mediterranean climate and the presence of humid and warm air masses in the Mediterranean basin, which led to heavy rains and strong floods. We emphasize that this storm also affects our country from time to time, as dense clouds appear sometimes accompanied by rain or thunderstorms, and it has included the northern and central regions of the country, in addition to the highlands of the Atlas and the Rif, and certain eastern regions. The high plateaus of the High and Middle Atlas also experienced snowfall.
Concerning Morocco, the press release indicates that the impact of the depression was less severe than that of southeastern Spain, but that it led to significant precipitation on Tuesday, since 100 mm were recorded in Tanger Med and 84 mm at Fnideq.
The press release concludes in relation to expectations, and considering that this storm mainly concerns southern Spain, Morocco is also affected, but less severely.
For Thursday, some light scattered rain is expected to persist in the regions of Tangier, Lokos, Gharb, Gharb Rif and the western Mediterranean, with the possibility of scattered drops falling on the Atlantic coasts north of Essaouira. The weather will be relatively cold, with local frosts forming in the Atlas regions and the eastern highlands. The northern coasts will also experience relatively strong wind gusts.
As for Friday, the effect of the depression is expected to weaken so that the weather will gradually stabilize, despite scattered remnants of rain on the Mediterranean coast, the Atlas and the northern and central Atlantic coasts, and the weather will be cold during the day. high plateaus.
