The Kingdom of Morocco welcomes the adoption, on Thursday, of resolution (2756) of the UN Security Council, extending the mandate of MINURSO until October 31, 2025,
The United Nations (UN) Security Council has called for a political solution ” realistic and acceptable », cardinal elements of the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, whose preeminence has been reaffirmed.
This resolution establishes two important developments which reinforce the position of the Kingdom:
– In the first addition, the Council “welcomed the recent momentum and urged that we build around‘‘. Therefore, the Council endorses the international dynamic experienced by the Moroccan Sahara issue under the leadership of His Majesty the King, Mohammed VI, may God help him, in favor of the Moroccan character of the Sahara and the Moroccan Initiative to ‘Autonomy.
– The second addition concerns the Security Council’s call to other parties “to avoid acts that could compromise the political process,” observes the ministry, noting that the Council is thus echoing the clear official position of the Kingdom, stressing that there is no political process without respect for the ceasefire.
The resolution clearly asks the Security Council to take into consideration the international dynamic and momentum for the benefit of the Moroccan autonomy initiative which enjoys the support of 20 members of the European Union, two permanent members of the Security Council and more from around a hundred countries and regional and international organizations around the world.
In addition, the resolution clearly identifies the parties to the dispute, notably Algeria which is cited in the resolution as many times as Morocco. It also blatantly reveals its contradictions: It claims to defend international legality, Security Council resolutions and UN efforts, while refusing to support these same efforts and clinging to an obstructionist logic. Faced with its contradictions, Algeria was forced not to participate in the vote, a brazen attitude given UN diplomatic practice.
Noting that today’s resolution was adopted by 12 votes in favor, 2 abstentions and the non-participation of the neighboring country, a non-permanent member of the Security Council. This non-participation demonstrates the isolation of this country’s position within the Security Council and the international community in general.
The adoption of this resolution further establishes the isolation of Algeria’s dogmatic positions within the international community.
