“One of the targets associated with sustainable development objectives relates specifically to the elimination of female genital mutilation. When this practice is completely abandoned, beneficial effects will be felt at the scale of societies, women and girls taking possession of their health, their rights and their enormous potential. »S/G of the UN
The female genital mutilations cover all the interventions which consist in altering or damaging the genitals of women for non -medical reasons. They are recognized at international level as a violation of the fundamental rights of women and girls.
They are a reflection of a deeply rooted inequality between the sexes and constitute an extreme form of discrimination against women and girls. These practices also violate their rights to health, safety and physical integrity, the right to be protected from cruel, inhuman or degrading torture and treatments, as well as the right to life when these practices have deadly consequences.
To encourage the abandonment of female genital mutilation, it is necessary to implement coordinated and systematic initiatives but also involve all communities on the issue of fundamental rights and that of gender equality. These initiatives must emphasize social dialogue and allow communities to act collectively, in order to eliminate this practice. They must also be able to meet the needs of women and girls who suffer the consequences of this practice, especially in terms of sexual and reproductive health.
