Heba Press – Muhammad Zaruh
A disclosed video clip sparked a general shock after a violent attack was documented by a Spanish police officer on a Moroccan immigrant inside a detention center in Fenwenkalla.
The clip, which was broadcast by the “Mañaneros” program on the “TVE” channel, shows shocking scenes, where the police officer stormed the dungeon and led the repeated strikes of the immigrant, while another policeman looked at the scene without any interference, which increased the controversy on the violations of the detention centers.
In the first official commentary, the Spanish authorities confirmed that they were aware of the incident dating from last January, noting that he awaits the decision of the judiciary to take appropriate measures against the aggressor police.
According to security sources, the element involved always practices his work inside the center, but he is prevented from dealing directly with the detainees until the end of the surveys, in a decision considered by insufficient human rights workers to ensure responsibility.
For its part, human rights organizations have expressed their concern about what it described as a “dangerous violation”, stressing the need to conduct an independent investigation to reveal the extent of the spread of these practices within the Spanish detention centers. These organizations have also called to tighten the control mechanisms to ensure that these incidents are not repeated in the future and to impose strict sanctions on the people involved in human rights violations.
This incident is not the first of its kind, because the 2019 incident returned to the mind of a detention center in Valence, where a young Moroccan died after being attacked inside his cell, in the midst of the police accusations not to protect him. Despite the conflict of accounts on the circumstances of the accident, many activists indicated that there was negligence of security which contributed to the tragedy.
With the escalation of anger and the pressure of human rights, public opinion awaits the results of surveys on this case, which will be a real test of the extent of the commitment of the Spanish authorities to hold people involved and to ensure the protection of migrants in the detention centers of any similar violation in the future.
