During 2024, Spain recorded unprecedented figures in the field of naturalization, considerably bypassing expectations. The number of people with Spanish citizenship this year reached 252,476 people, an increase of 5.1% compared to the previous year, recording the highest rate since 2013.
The Moroccans occupied the head of this scene, surpassing the American Latin nationalities which were traditionally in competition with them in this indicator.
According to an official report published by the Spanish National Institute of Statistics, Moroccans dominated the list of naturalized people with 42,910 cases of naturalization. The Venezuelan arrived second with 35,403 cases, then the Columbion with 26,224. It is interesting that the report indicates that 56% of naturalized women were women, while men were 44%. He also explained that the average period of residence before obtaining citizenship was five years.
In terms of methods of obtaining citizenship, the report revealed that 85% of naturalized staff obtained it by the legal residence, while 14.4% were naturalized thanks to the “naturalization to choose”, which includes in particular minors subject to the supervision of one of the parents of Spanish origin.
The report also indicated that the age group between 30 and 39 was most for obtaining Spanish citizenship, followed by a category of 40 to 49 years.
At the geographical level, Catalonia exceeded the Spanish parties in terms of naturalized number of people with 68,755 cases, followed by Madrid with 48,288, then Valencia with 26,729, and finally Andalusia with 23.157. However, these figures do not reflect the challenges that many Moroccans face in Spain.
Despite the great digital success in obtaining Spanish citizenship, many Moroccans are faced with a shocking legal paradox. Although bilateral agreements between Morocco and Spain are supposed to facilitate the replacement procedures for Moroccan driving licenses by Spanish licenses, reality indicates that many Moroccans cannot do so. This exposes them to heavy financial fines up to thousands of euros, according to certificates transmitted by local media.
These bureaucratic complications constitute an additional obstacle for Moroccan immigrants, who reflect a confusing reality where, despite their pregnancy of Spanish citizenship, they are always confronted with daily difficulties which hinder their complete integration into Spanish society.
