The administration of Berkane 2 local prison issued a clarifying statement following a post by a former inmate alleging that inmate (R.H.), detained at the facility, had gone on a hunger strike to protest the administration’s alleged refusal to provide him with measurements for his medical glasses.
In this regard, the prison administration clarified that the inmate in question had never informed the prison administration of going on a hunger strike, and that the relevant departments within the institution had not recorded any indication of this, whether through an official notice or through daily health checks of the inmates. Regarding the medical glasses, the administration confirmed that inmate (R.H.) did not request measurements for his glasses until Friday, September 19, 2025, after benefiting from a medical examination by an ophthalmologist on September 16, 2025. The prison administration also stated that the inmate had previously benefited from 14 specialized medical consultations for urinary tract diseases as part of his regular health monitoring, reflecting the institution’s commitment to ensuring his right to healthcare as stipulated by law. The Berkane 2 local prison administration reaffirmed its full commitment to upholding the rights of inmates, particularly the right to treatment and healthcare, while calling for accuracy and truthfulness in disseminating information related to the situation of inmates within prison facilities, to avoid spreading misinformation that might unjustly damage the work of the prison system without factual basis.
