Today, World Vitiligo Day: The reasons for an international initiative


This world day was wanted by fans of Mickael Jackson, who suffered from vitiligo. This is a disease which manifests itself in particular by depigmentation of the skin.

An international initiative to have June 25 officially recognized as World Vitiligo Day by the United Nations has been launched through the website It aims to collect 500,000 signatures for a petition which will be brought to the attention of the Secretary General of the United Nations.

Vitiligo has been known for a long time and is already mentioned in the Ebers Papyrus which dates from 2500 BC. AD

The name of this disease comes from the Latin vitulum or vitium which could therefore mean “calf” or “white spot”.

Vitiligo manifests itself as areas of depigmented skin of varying sizes, on the face, feet, hands, joints, etc. This disease is neither infectious, nor contagious, nor physically painful. However, its psychological repercussions should not be taken lightly and those affected often suffer from the gaze of others.
