A source close to the Hamas delegation stated on Sunday that the movement will not participate in governing the Gaza Strip during the transitional phase following the war with Israel, days after the ceasefire came into effect.
The source explained to Agence France-Presse that Hamas considers the issue of governing Gaza to be a closed matter, but it will remain an essential part of the Palestinian fabric.
Husam Badran, a member of the movement's political bureau, had previously announced that Hamas would not participate in the "Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit" to sign the ceasefire agreement, indicating that the movement is dealing with mediators from Qatar and Egypt to settle the conflict, while no comment has been issued by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding his participation in the summit.
It is worth noting that indirect negotiations between the Israeli and Hamas delegations resumed in Sharm el-Sheikh on October 6, with Egyptian, Qatari, and American mediation, and resulted in a preliminary agreement that included the release of hostages and the withdrawal of the Israeli army to an agreed-upon line inside the Strip, before the ceasefire came into effect on October 10, and that the peace summit would be held on October 13 to conclude the final agreement.
