The construction project of the "Ait Ziyat" dam in the Al Haouz province is witnessing remarkable progress, with the completion rate of the work reaching about 96 percent, with a storage capacity estimated at 186 million cubic meters.
A noticeable acceleration in the pace of work
This project is being carried out within the framework of the high royal directives aimed at strengthening water security and developing water infrastructure in the region, with the work to be completed by the end of 2025.
A noticeable acceleration in the pace of work is recorded in the project, as the completion period has been reduced by more than 20 months, an indication of the efforts made to ensure its readiness as soon as possible. The dam is expected to begin receiving the first quantities of water during December 2025.
The final works are currently continuing, which include completing the backfilling of the main dam, paving and cladding the intakes for drinking water and irrigation, in addition to preparing the bottom outlet with concrete.
At the same time, the electromechanical equipment for operating the dam is being installed, in addition to preparing the reservoir by transferring electricity poles and rebuilding some public facilities located outside its scope.
Securing drinking water in the region
The "Ait Ziyat" dam is one of the most important water projects in the Al Haouz province. It is an earth dam with a height of 71 meters above the foundation, and its reservoir area reaches about 992 hectares, while its sloping basin extends over an area of approximately 521.7 square kilometers, highlighting its size and vital role in the development of the region.
This project aims to achieve several integrated development goals, most notably the rehabilitation of the local workforce, securing drinking water for the population, and expanding irrigated areas to improve agricultural productivity.
The dam also contributes to breaking the isolation of the neighboring villages by creating new road paths, in addition to promoting ecotourism through the dam lake, which will form a natural space attractive to visitors.
The Ait Ziyat dam is considered a strategic step within Morocco's vision aimed at strengthening water security and supporting local development, and an embodiment of the Kingdom's policy of valuing water resources and utilizing them sustainably to serve the population and economic and agricultural fields.
