A court in the Spanish city of Valladolid issued a sentence last Friday, sentencing five people belonging to a Moroccan family to two years in prison after convicting them of exploiting undocumented migrants in agricultural work, without registering them in the social security system.
This ruling came after the defendants confessed to their illegal practices, which the court considered a form of "modern slavery" within the Spanish agricultural sector, where they employed migrants in difficult working conditions and without legal rights or social security. This case is one of the most prominent cases that highlights the phenomenon of exploiting migrant labor in Spain, especially in rural areas that depend on agriculture, as incidents of employing undocumented workers at low wages and harsh conditions are frequent, which prompted the authorities to intensify monitoring and strengthen legal procedures to combat these practices.
