Morocco is considered an exceptional candidate to obtain a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, in light of the expected reforms within the United Nations that aim to expand the council's membership and add new permanent representatives from various continents.
This nomination comes in the context of the increasing international respect that Morocco enjoys, especially after three of the permanent members of the Security Council voted in its favor, and the abstention of Russia and China from using the veto right, which reflects the prestigious position that the Kingdom has come to occupy with the great powers. Observers believe that the United Nations reform project, which is steadily moving towards implementation during the term of US President Donald Trump, may witness the entry of new countries into the miniature club of global powers, with the possibility of granting Africa a permanent seat to represent it. The name of the Kingdom of Morocco stands out as the strongest African candidate thanks to its balanced foreign policy and its strong relations with the five permanent member states, especially the United States, France, and Britain, in addition to Russia and China, which have close economic and strategic partnerships with Morocco. The United States of America, in its capacity as the "penholder" in formulating decisions and policies within the Security Council, is expected to play a decisive role in determining the new countries that will join the permanent council within the framework of the expected UN reform. Five African countries are competing for this historic seat, namely: Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, Nigeria, and Ethiopia, but the current indicators favor the Kingdom of Morocco, which enjoys consensus and increasing support from the major international powers.
