The session of the House of Representatives this Tuesday morning witnessed a heated debate about the traffic accident compensation file, following the directing of questions to the Minister of Justice, Abdelatif Wahbi, about the draft law on compensation for traffic accidents.
Deputies from the opposition considered that the compensations included in the new draft law are not fair to the victims and do not reflect the high cost of living and treatment, stressing that this project is in the interest of insurance companies. In his response, Wahbi explained that he had entered into direct negotiations with insurance companies, and conveyed the content of the discussion to the parliamentarians, saying that these companies clearly informed him that "if you increase compensation, we'll increase subscription fees". Wahbi added: "That is their right, because they are companies in the private sector," explaining that he has no objection to raising the compensation for traffic accidents "even by 1000 percent," but they will, in return, automatically raise the value of subscriptions, which may affect millions of insured people. The minister pointed out that this sensitive equation prompted him to search for a consensual formula that guarantees a relative increase in the compensation of the injured without causing a large increase in insurance premiums. He stressed that the goal is to reach a gradual reform that protects the rights of victims while preserving the balances of the sector.
