The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, officially launched the Olympic torch route in a ceremony held at the Quirinale Palace in Rome, signaling the start of the countdown to the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. The ceremony was attended by government officials and athletes, where the ceremonial brazier was lit before the national tour of the torch through a number of Italian cities began.
The torch route extends for thousands of kilometers, passing through dozens of provinces, leading up to the opening ceremony scheduled for February 6, 2026. According to the organizers, this event aims to highlight the values of solidarity and peace and spread the Olympic spirit across the various Italian regions.
