More than 507,000 people have died in the war in Syria since it broke out in 2011, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH), based in the United Kingdom, estimated on Thursday, on the eve of the 13th anniversary of the conflict which divided the country.
According to a press release from the OSDH, which has a vast network of sources in the country at war, more than 164,000 civilians, including more than 15,000 women and 25,000 children, were killed.
These figures reflect an increase of around 4,000 deaths compared to March 2023, the front lines having generally stabilized for several years, added the same source.
According to the UN, 16.7 million people in Syria are in need of humanitarian assistance or protection and more than seven million people are internally displaced.
The devastating earthquake that shook Turkey and Syria in February 2023 made the problem worse.
Western sanctions have, in turn, exacerbated an economic crisis caused by the war which has ravaged the country’s infrastructure where 90% of the population lives below the poverty line.
