HIBAPRESS – Rabat
Despite more than 15 years having passed, the incident of the "phantom Togo national team" is still considered one of the strangest events in the history of football, after a friendly match turned into a scandal that shook the global football community.
The details of the incident go back to September 7, 2010, when the Bahrain national football team played a friendly match against a team presented as the Togo national team, on the grounds of the Bahrain National Stadium, as part of the two teams' preparations for upcoming events. The match proceeded normally in terms of organization, refereeing, and television broadcasting, and ended with Bahrain winning with a score of 3 goals to nil.
However, the shock came immediately after the end of the match, when the Togolese Football Federation issued an official statement categorically denying that it had sent any official delegation to Bahrain, confirming that the team that played the match had no connection to the Togo national team or the local federation.
This denial opened the door to an investigation into one of the most dangerous cases of manipulation known in football, where it was later revealed that a Singaporean person was behind the organization of the match, a name that was associated during that period with several cases related to match-fixing and manipulation of results, and was wanted by the International Football Federation and Interpol.
Although the match was managed by international referees, and broadcast on television screens, and appeared for a short period in the official records, the scandal prompted the competent authorities to later delete it after confirming its illegality and the identity of the team that played it.
The incident sparked a wave of widespread condemnation at the time, and raised serious questions about the mechanisms for organizing international friendly matches, and the loopholes that allowed a phantom team to enter the arena of official competitions, in an incident that is still remembered today as one of the strangest and most embarrassing stories in the history of world football.
