Delcy Rodriguez assumed her position as acting president of Venezuela late Sunday, according to the Venezuelan presidency website, which published photos of her chairing the first cabinet meeting.
Prior to that, Rodriguez announced that she had invited the US government to participate in a "cooperation agenda" between the two countries, aimed at "joint development within the framework of international law and promoting permanent social coexistence." Rodriguez affirmed that Venezuela will seek to prioritize "balanced and respectful" international relations with the United States and other countries in the region, directing a direct message to US President Donald Trump, saying: "Our people and our region deserve peace and dialogue, not war. This is the message of President Nicolas Maduro, and it is the message of all of Venezuela today." For his part, Trump said he expects Rodriguez to give the United States "full access" to Venezuelan oil and other resources that could help the country rebuild. The US President added, reiterating his previous statements to "The Atlantic" magazine, that Rodriguez may face a worse fate than Maduro if she does not "do the right thing," without clarifying the details of what he meant by that.
