One person died and nine others were injured with varying degrees of severity, due to an explosion caused by a gas leak inside a residential apartment in the Carabanchel district, southwest of the Spanish capital, Madrid.
The incident occurred while the building was undergoing restoration and maintenance work, which exacerbated the extent of the material damage to it and the neighboring apartments. Fire, ambulance, and police teams rushed to the scene of the explosion immediately after receiving the report, where the area was cordoned off and residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Local authorities confirmed that the injured were transferred to nearby hospitals for treatment, while the competent authorities launched an investigation to find out the circumstances of the incident and the causes of the gas leak, amid a state of alert among the emergency services.
