The imprisoned Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro, sent a message to the Venezuelan people from inside a US prison, in which he called on them to support the interim president of the country, Delcy Rodriguez, and support her team during this stage.
Nicolas Maduro Guerra, the son of the imprisoned president, quoted his father as saying in a message broadcast by the official Venezuelan News Agency (AVN): "Trust Delcy and her team, and trust us," stressing that Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores are in high spirits and great cohesion, and draw their strength from their faith in God and their trust in the Venezuelan people. The US special forces had arrested Maduro and Flores in Caracas on January 3, before transferring them to New York, where the couple is expected to appear before the American judiciary on charges related to drug trafficking. After the arrest of Maduro, Delcy Rodriguez, who previously held the position of Vice President, took the constitutional oath as interim president of Venezuela, in a move that sparked widespread reactions. In her first positions, Rodriguez strongly condemned the American operation, stressing that Maduro is the legitimate president of the country, and at the same time expressed her readiness to open channels of dialogue with the United States regarding potential cooperation between the two parties. In recent days, the Venezuelan authorities have released a number of political prisoners, in a move that Rodriguez said would continue during the coming stage. In a related context, US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he had held what he described as a "wonderful conversation" during his first known call with Venezuelan interim president Delcy Rodriguez.
