Sweden has expressed “its support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, in light of Security Council Resolution 2797,” considering it a “credible basis” for negotiations aimed at reaching a final solution to the artificial regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
This position was expressed in an official statement issued by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following telephone talks held today, Monday, between the Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Tobias Billström, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita.
With this explicit support, Sweden joins the vast majority of member states in the European Union, and more than two-thirds of the member states of the United Nations in supporting the Moroccan autonomy plan.
It is worth noting that United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which was adopted on October 31, 2025, affirms that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty constitutes the most applicable solution to this regional dispute.
