The United States has announced the completion of its official withdrawal from the World Health Organization, a year after US President Donald Trump decided to end Washington's 78-year commitment to the organization, justifying the move with what it described as the organization's failures in managing the COVID-19 pandemic crisis.
A joint statement by the US Department of Health and the State Department confirmed that any future dealings with the organization would be limited and restricted to completing the withdrawal procedures, while emphasizing that there was no intention to participate as an observer or to rejoin again.
Witnesses reported the removal of the American flag from in front of the organization's headquarters in Geneva, while Washington explained that it would move towards direct cooperation with other countries in the areas of disease monitoring and public health priorities, instead of working through an international organization.
