The proposals for the technical amendment project of the constitution in Algeria are devoid of any clause related to extending the presidential term or opening it to more than two terms, contrary to what was circulated from speculation.
The director of the Office of the Presidency of the Republic, Boualem Boualem, announced on Saturday, ten proposals for the amendment, during a national conference dedicated to presenting the two projects related to the constitutional amendment and the electoral system. The most prominent proposals include including the educational level requirement for candidacy for the presidency of the Republic, organizing the ceremony of taking the constitutional oath, in addition to the possibility of calling for early local elections, and expanding the powers of the National Independent Electoral Authority, with the inclusion of transitional provisions to ensure the continuity of state institutions. For his part, Prime Minister Seffi Gharib confirmed that the proposed amendments fall within the framework of efforts to strengthen what he called the "democratic path and consolidating the rule of law," stressing that the Algerian constitution defines the presidential term at five years and does not allow more than two terms, which means that Tebboune is heading to leave the El Mouradia Palace.
