HIBAPRESS – Essaouira
On Monday, February 2, 2026, the province of Essaouira hosted a national event on the occasion of World Wetlands Day, under the slogan "Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage," organized by the National Agency for Water and Forests in partnership with the provincial administration.
The Director General of the Agency, Abd al-Rahim Homi, emphasized in his speech the vital role of these areas in protecting biodiversity, securing water, and addressing climate change, stressing that the recent rainfall has improved water resources after years of drought, but it does not exempt Morocco from continuing sustainable efforts. This initiative comes within the framework of the "Morocco Forests 2020-2030" strategy, which aims to restore degraded ecosystems, expand the national network of protected areas, enhance the involvement of local communities, and value traditional knowledge. The occasion witnessed the signing of an agreement to protect the natural reserve of the Essaouira archipelago, which hosts one of the largest global gatherings of the Eleonora's falcon and is a promising space for developing ecotourism and creating local job opportunities. The day also included a field visit to learn about the efforts of rehabilitation and sustainable management of natural resources, including the argan ecosystem. Through this celebration, the Agency affirms its commitment to preserving wetlands and promoting their sustainable development for the benefit of present and future generations.
