Vladimir Putin was re-elected as president of Russia, accumulating 87.8% of the vote, according to initial estimates based on exit polls.
The result marks a significant moment in the already long political career of Putin, who, at 71, remains firmly in control of Russia, consolidating his position after 24 years of rule.
Putin’s victory hardly surprises observers of Russian politics, but the scale of his success is notable. Preliminary regional results are just beginning to be released, and they confirm the general trend. For example, in the Russian capital, Moscow, Putin would have received up to 89% of the vote.
