HIBAPRESS – Abdellatif Baraka
The Souss-Massa region is witnessing a wave of concern after the detection of swarms of desert locusts that threaten agriculture in the most important and largest agricultural regions of the Kingdom. A single swarm can contain up to 80 million adult insects, capable of consuming an amount of food equivalent to what 35,000 people need daily.
The authorities explain that early detection and rapid intervention are the main factors in avoiding major losses in agricultural crops, especially citrus fruits, vegetables, and fruits, which form an economic pillar for the entire national territory. The threatened areas are constantly monitored, with intensified preventive spraying operations and aerial surveillance of the swarms in coordination with farmers. Experts in agriculture confirm that any delay in response may lead to the rapid spread of locust swarms, which directly affects agricultural productivity and food security for the residents of Souss-Massa and Morocco in general. Those interested in public policies emphasize the importance of cooperation between the authorities and farmers and early monitoring to ensure the protection of crops and maintain the region's ability to continue meeting the food needs of Moroccans.
