The Republic of Ecuador renewed its support today, Friday, for the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007, describing it as the only serious, credible, and realistic solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
This position was expressed in a joint statement, signed in Rabat, following discussions between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of the Republic of Ecuador, Gabriela Sommerfeld, who is on a working visit to the Kingdom. Ecuador also praised the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), reiterating that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty represents the most viable solution to end this regional dispute. The two countries reaffirmed their support for the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara, as well as for efforts to advance the political process in order to reach a final solution to this conflict. On the other hand, the joint statement confirmed that the Republic of Ecuador has decided to expand its consular coverage in the Moroccan Sahara, in accordance with international law. Ecuador also expressed its willingness to promote opportunities for economic and commercial cooperation in the Moroccan Sahara, which opens promising prospects towards the African continent for its economic sectors, and with the aim of strengthening exchanges in the field of investment, trade and productive development. The Ecuadorian Minister announced that the Ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador in Rabat will soon visit the Sahara region, with the aim of preparing and supporting many economic initiatives.
