Climate change is increasing the vulnerability of the world’s forests, which are increasingly facing climate-related pressures such as fires and pests, a report from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Monday.
This State of the World’s Forests 2024 report, which focuses on the role of innovation in achieving a sustainable future for the forest sector, notes evidence suggesting that climate change is making forests more vulnerable to factors such as fires and pests.
Fires reached a new high in 2021, mainly due to a prolonged drought that FAO says led to increased fire severity and fuel consumption, which accounted for nearly a quarter of total wildfire emissions.
Regarding the aspect of innovative solutions in the forestry sector, the report lists five actions that can enable forests to face the challenges.
This involves raising awareness, building skills, capacities and knowledge in innovation, encouraging transformational partnerships, ensuring greater and universally accessible funding for innovation, and providing an incentive policy and regulatory environment.
