HIBAPRESS – WAM
The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, condemned before the members of the UN Security Council the Iranian attacks that targeted, on Saturday, the territories of several Arab countries.
During an emergency meeting of the UN executive body dedicated to discussing developments in the region, Guterres affirmed that these attacks "violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates." After warning of a "serious threat" to international peace and security, the Secretary-General stressed that there is no practical alternative to the peaceful settlement of international conflicts. He said in his speech during the meeting, which was called by several member states of the Security Council against the backdrop of the military attack launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, and what followed from Iranian attacks targeting Arab countries in the region, that "lasting peace can only be achieved through peaceful means, especially through genuine dialogue and serious negotiations." In this context, he called on all parties to return "immediately" to the negotiating table. The UN official also urged all member states to "strictly adhere to their commitments under international law, especially the UN Charter, and to respect and protect civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law, and to ensure nuclear safety and security."
