The Secretariat of State for Maritime Fisheries has adopted two ministerial decisions related to the spatial division of the coastal trawling fleet and the longline fishing fleets, within the framework of implementing the strategic orientations of the "Halieutis" plan, and in order to ensure the sustainable management of fish resources.
A statement from the Secretariat of State for Maritime Fisheries mentioned that Decision No. (PC CHAL-01/26) issued on February 3, 2026, defines the spatial division for the coastal trawling fleet by dividing Moroccan marine waters into five planning units, with a precise definition of unloading ports and geographical boundaries for each unit.
The same source explained that starting from the 2026 fishing season, each coastal trawler is required to carry out its activities within only one planning unit, with the necessity of unloading catches in the ports belonging to the chosen unit, which will be specified in the vessel's fishing license.
It pointed out that in parallel with that, Decision No. (PC PAL-01/26) issued on January 26, 2026, which amends Article Two of Decision No. (PC PAL-01/25) related to the spatial division of longline fishing fleets, aims to adapt the three fishing areas and unloading ports, ensuring a better harmony between the activity of this fleet category and the reception capacity of the concerned ports.
These spatial division decisions have been adopted following a series of consultations and coordination with professionals in the maritime fishing sector.
The main objective of this spatial division is to establish a balanced and harmonious spatial organization that contributes to the sustainable exploitation of marine resources, while ensuring the economic viability of fishing activities.
It is worth noting that these measures constitute the first phase of a gradual process to reorganize fisheries planning and management plans, with other complementary measures to be adopted later.
