The Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the International Organizations in Vienna, Azzouz Farhane, reiterated the Kingdom's firm commitment to strengthening the international nuclear security system.

Mr. Farhane said, in a speech delivered on the occasion of the meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency, from March 2 to 6 in Vienna, that "Morocco remains fully committed to working closely with its regional and international partners in order to contribute to strengthening the international nuclear security system and achieving the goals of the International Atomic Energy Agency."

In his intervention within the framework of the fourth point on the agenda related to the "Nuclear Security Report for 2026", the Ambassador praised the efforts made by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, as well as the General Secretariat, in preparing the Nuclear Security Report for 2026 (GOV/2026/3).

The Moroccan delegation took note of the report that reviews the activities undertaken by the Agency in response to the evolving challenges and risks, and highlights the main developments and new security areas, and aims to strengthen nuclear security globally.

The delegation also took note of the Agency's continued implementation of the Nuclear Security Plan for the period 2022-2025, highlighting the pivotal role of the International Atomic Energy Agency in strengthening nuclear security, which supports the safe use of nuclear technologies and prevents the diversion or misuse of nuclear and other radioactive materials.

The diplomat recorded that "in the section dedicated to strengthening capacities in the field of nuclear security, the report confirms that the Agency has signed an extension agreement with Morocco through its cooperating center, the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiation Safety and Security (AMSNOR), with the aim of strengthening regional capacities in the field of nuclear security."

On the other hand, Mr. Farhane mentioned Morocco's active contribution, during the past year, to many initiatives and training programs organized in coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency, within the framework of its permanent commitment to strengthening capacities in this field.

Mr. Farhane highlighted that the Kingdom participated, in this regard, in the joint organization with the United States of America, from February 3 to 5, 2026, of the second general meeting of the Global Forum for the Prevention of Radiological and Nuclear Terrorism, which brought together experts with the aim of strengthening prevention, detection and response mechanisms, nuclear forensic analysis and the mitigation of threats, reviewing the efforts made by the Kingdom to serve the strengthening of the international nuclear security system and achieving the goals of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

In addition, Morocco organized, from September 29 to October 3, 2025, a workshop in coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency, which focused on the development of human resources and training frameworks specifically for nuclear security, "in order to assist member states in strengthening preventive measures against the theft, sabotage or illicit use of nuclear materials".

Mr. Farhane added that, on the other hand, the Kingdom, through the "AMSNOR" agency, supervised several workshops and training courses aimed at strengthening the culture of nuclear security and deepening the assessment of threats.

He continued that Morocco, while committed to strengthening nuclear security in cooperation with its regional and international partners, has implemented "specific measures to promote the principles and goals of an effective security culture among human resources in national organizations and operators of radioactive sources."

The Moroccan diplomat concluded that Morocco also organized two regional workshops that benefited more than 40 African experts, which addressed the development of human resources and the mitigation of internal threats, including aspects related to artificial intelligence.
